Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows offers an absorbing look at what social psychologist Melanie Joy calls carnism, the belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals when we would never dream of eating others. Carnism causes extensive animal suffering and global injustice, and it drives us to act against our own interests and the interests of others without fully realizing what we are doing. Becoming aware of what carnism is and how it functions is vital to personal empowerment and social transformation, as it enables us to make our food choices more freely - because without awareness, there is no free choice.

I was losing a lot of sleep over this terribly hypocracy, thank you.

Hypocrisy, my bad

It seems we love, and form enduring attachments, to the cute ones, and eat the delicious ones. However, this is by no means an exhaustive analysis.
Adding to the carnalicious case is the fact that smug vegans are consuming trillions of microorganisms and beefy protozoans, even in their avoidance of the meat atrocity.
And I hate to pull rank, but there’s a definitive study featured in the prestigious, august publication “Beef Magazine” which accuses vegetarians of being more often ill, and of having a lower quality of living than selfless meat eaters. What’s more, vegetarians are more likely to have cancer, heart attacks, lurgy & Groat’s syndrome. They are also quite miserable looking, surly & bad-tempered.
Any conflict of interest has been superciliously dismissed by the proprietors of Beef Magazine.

We don’t eat dogs because no one in this country sells dog meat on the open market. At least that’s why I don’t eat them.

I haven’t listened to this book but here is my answer to why I love dogs, eat pigs, and wear leather:
Dogs helped our ancestors hunt and protect their livestock from other preditors, not eating dogs is simple meat math; if you eat your dogs you would have less meat in the long run. Dogs also protected homes and families.
Cats helped our ancestors protect grains and seeds from explosive rodent populations. If you eat your cats you would have less bread ingredients, less grain to feed your livestock in the winter, less seed to plant food and fodder the next year, etc.
Wool and leather make great clothing and kept our ancestors warm, dry, and protected their skin.
Meat in nutritious and kept our ancestors nurished.
Most of us who are pet owners and carnivors are pet owners and carnivores because our parents were.
Most of us are the descendents of carnivores and pet owners because the humans who didn’t own pets and use animal products were less likely to produce offspring who produce offspring.
We are free to lament what worked in the past, and given modern technology we are free to wear plastic polyester, slurp imported tofu, and own virtual pokemons instead of carnivorous pets.
But wouldn’t you rather wear a leather jacket, chew a steak, and throw the bones to Fido?
