The Parallax View is Slavoj Žižek’s most substantial theoretical work to appear in many years; Žižek himself describes it as his magnum opus. Parallax can be defined as the apparent displacement of an object, caused by a change in observational position. Žižek is interested in the “parallax gap” separating two points between which no synthesis or mediation is possible, linked by an “impossible short circuit” of levels that can never meet. From this consideration of parallax, Žižek begins a rehabilitation of dialectical materialism.
Modes of parallax can be seen in different domains of today’s theory, from the wave-particle duality in quantum physics to the parallax of the unconscious in Freudian psychoanalysis between interpretations of the formation of the unconscious and theories of drives. In The Parallax View, Žižek, with his usual astonishing erudition, focuses on three main modes of parallax: the ontological difference, the ultimate parallax that conditions our very access to reality; the scientific parallax, the irreducible gap between the phenomenal experience of reality and its scientific explanation, which reaches its apogee in today’s brain sciences (according to which “nobody is home” in the skull, just stacks of brain meat - a condition Žižek calls “the unbearable lightness of being no one”); and the political parallax, the social antagonism that allows for no common ground. Between his discussions of these three modes, Žižek offers interludes that deal with more specific topics - including an ethical act in a novel by Henry James and anti-anti-Semitism.

That is great, thank you so much!! Love Zizek!!!
no Keywords?

“Incoherent” might be a useful keyword, in order to epitomise the effort. Noam has even had a cut at Slavoj: “I don’t see anything to what he’s saying.” And he’s even used the word “cult” a few times.
In fairness, Slavoj wasn’t Slo(venian) in getting back at Noam, “I don’t know a guy who was so often empirically wrong” (deploying the below the belt example of Noam and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia).
Noam responded by angrily ejaculating “Come at me, Žižek, and see what happens. You lousy postmodern panderer!”

I wonder why so many around thrashing comments without even read a word of the book - Actually, his book begins with a nice critique of Stalin’s dialect materialism, which domenico losurdo uses to defend him. And a conspiracy theory about Walter Benjamin’s death. really interesting.

They’re really just thrashing each other, I think - which at least leaves the innocent population in peace (for now!). A victimless crime.
When Noam & Slavoj go at each other like that, leave ‘em at it, I say!
(Great news about the book though.)

Caesar963: Hi. (Obtuse Mooose again). You gave this book 5 stars (despite the criticism). Does that mean you think it is worth reading? Or, is it in fact “incoherent”? Thanks.

Thanks a lot as always, Guest!

Hey mooose, 5 stars to the uploader & the technical quality of their effort.
Read away, but I’ve read & heard Slavoj (Sophie Fiennes’ two “Pervert’s Guide” films), and substantially agree with Noam’s (& many others’) criticisms. It’s merely a form of elaborate ideological prestidigitation; or charlatanry, as Chomsky refers to it. Entertaining, p’haps.

Thanks for this. Always insightful comments caesar. I will give this a look, have read some of Zizeks stuff. I think there needs to be less theory and more statistical data to support assertions made by social theorists. Charlatanary is rampant these days as are rabid followers of anything appearing somewhat coherent, and cookie cutter thinking which follows, and is, to my mind, at least, not freethinking, neither is it explorative. I’m with Schopenhauer, learn to think first, then learn to read…
