Publisher’s Summary
If socialists and Wall Street bankers can agree on anything, it is the extreme rationalism of capital. Ignoring the motive force of the spirit, capitalism rejects the awe-inspiring divine for the economics of supply and demand.
Eugene McCarraher challenges this conventional view. Capitalism, he argues, is full of sacrament, whether or not it is acknowledged. Capitalist enchantment first flowered in the fields and factories of England and was brought to America by Puritans and evangelicals whose doctrine made ample room for industry and profit. Later, the corporation was mystically animated with human personhood, to preside over the Fordist endeavor to build a heavenly city of mechanized production and communion. By the 21st century, capitalism has become thoroughly enchanted by the neoliberal deification of “the market”.
The Enchantments of Mammon looks not to Marx and progressivism but to 19th-century Romantics for salvation. The Romantic imagination favors craft, the commons, and sensitivity to natural wonder. It promotes labor that, for the sake of the person, combines reason, creativity, and mutual aid. In this impassioned challenge, McCarraher makes the case that capitalism has hijacked and redirected our intrinsic longing for divinity - and urges us to break its hold on our souls.

@marcodiluce if that’s a legitimate question, the answer is “someone who believes Trump won the recent election”.

@Lastdigit This looks more towards the likes of Müller, de Sismondi, Fichte, Carlyle, Löwy and Sayre.
The opposite of capitalism isn’t always communism or socialism, safer to assume it’s ‘not capitalism’.

> Ignoring the motive force of the spirit, capitalism rejects the awe-inspiring divine for the economics of supply and demand.
Capitalism does not reject, ignore or hinder anything people want to do, be it “awe-inspiring divine” or anything else — it’s just a sane economic system, known to work, and work well (maybe because there’s quite enough of “awe-inspiring divine” in it already? just a thought).
To the contrary, try anything “awe-inspiring divine” under socialism, and see how fast the government agents will knock on your door.
Also, marxists-socialists-communists have already tried to replace Christianity with socialism — properly identifying Christianity’s underlying moral absolutism foundation, and hating every bit of it — and failed (*).
(*) More than a 100 years ago, prominent Marxist Antonio Gramsci wrote: “Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. [Socialism is] religion in the sense that it too is a faith with its mystics and rituals; religion because it has substituted for the consciousness of the transcendental God of the Catholics, the faith in man and in his great strengths as a unique spiritual reality”. Equalizing an ideology with religion was pretty novel back then. However, Gramsci was talking about religion not as it is commonly understood — i.e., the relationship between God and men — but as a collection of religious attributes and rituals. In his point of view, socialism was godless religion, the cult of the messianic Marx.
At the same time, Gramsci understood that socialism (and leftism in general), like any other dogma, is immune to empirical, rational challenges because, by definition, its postulates are untestable — untestable not because it is impossible to conduct such tests, but because followers of leftist ideology reject any idea of such a test in principle (by the way, this is something leftists have in common with Muslims.) They are mostly true believers; they aggressively reject any attempts to test the foundations of their dogmatic beliefs…

oh, by the way, thnk you for this book to show how these capitalist fanatics are. worse, they are not even capitalist, or else they won’t be here, trashing in a sharing-peer-to-peer audio blog. I pray for their souls, hahaha

I would say that romanticism is definatly a mask worn to promote the social/communism side of public opinion rather than the independant/capitalist side.
Some capitalists profit from romanticism, but their affect is short term. whereas the commune side use romanticism to change policy and is long term.
It’s a neverending cycle.

alnilam, did you read the book? no, because as dogmatic you are to your God, why read books? let’s trach comments!! haha! you’re a joke
August 13th, 2021
bokeh, dude, you have no idea of the difference between state and private capitalism. Really sorry for that. Maybe you should read the book as well

On the recurring argument:
> Some people did not even bother to read the political book in question, and still argue against it
There are many left-leaning political books on the market. These days many, if not most of them, try to convince readers that:
(i) America as founded is bad, and has to be dismantled,
(ii) Capitalism is bad and oppressive, and must be discarded,
(iii) Socialism-communism is good and liberating, and promising way forward (or some mixture and variations thereof)
The trouble is that all of the above statements are patently false (supported by mountains of evidence to the contrary). So, in order to get somewhere, the authors can only rely on Goebbels-Alinsky techniques, rules and tactics. In other words, the more they scream about it from the rooftops, while their political party is stifling the opposition, the better their chances of success (i.e. they are likely to convince or strengthen beliefs of many left-leaning and undecided readers).
If you look closely, the left are always trying to sell you some fairytale, like PROGRESS or OMELETTE or UTOPIA or FLYING UNICORNS, something truly wonderful, just not seen anywhere else before. Ask them “Where’s the omelette?” (referring to countries where socialism has been tried, and failed miserably) — and suddenly you are enemy number one, simply because you dared to question their quasi-religious beliefs.
So, when I see a left-leaning political book, peddling one or another patently false theme or statement, or some mixture — it is unlikely that I will bother to read it in its entirety. And yes, I can still say a word or two about it in comments, because the probability of me being fundamentally right about it is reasonably high.

vehed80345: Name the at least one country to where all oppressed by capitalism want to leave.

@vehed80345 I’d advise against encouraging alnilam. He’ll just copy paste paragraphs worth of bollocks from his favourite RWNJ sites without any original thought of his own. He’s essentially just a bit at this point.

Oh sure, and if I walk on water, the trolls will say I can’t swim.

@alnilam so you thought you’d prove me wrong by shoddily paraphrasing one sentence instead. Well done.
See, not an original thought in your entire body.

It could be another “forum malfunction” — or it could be something else entirely.
Going back in time in POLITICAL section: Aug 14, Aug 13 … jump to Aug 08 (i.e. any political books posted between Aug 07 and Aug 12 are no longer there — or no longer visible in general view under POLITICAL, to be more precise).
The actual book posts in question (between Aug 07 and Aug 12) are still there — with some difficulty they can still be located and accessed — it’s just that those books posts no longer appear in general view under POLITICAL.
August 14th, 2021
> you thought you’d prove me wrong by shoddily paraphrasing one sentence instead. Well done.
And yet, for some peculiar reason, you write about it under some other book, unrelated to my comment, and the book/comments in question (*) somehow mysteriously and conveniently disappeared from general view under POLITICAL. How convenient for you that I can not longer argue my case publicly (silence the opponent and claim victory in debate, what else is new).
> See, not an original thought in your entire body
That may, or may not be the case. However, the unusual degree of your focused attention, passion and persistence tell another story.

Corrected date in asterisks (as of the moment of writing):
