From the award-winning journalist and best-selling author of ‘America’s Bitter Pill’: a tour de force examination of (1) how and why major American institutions no longer serve us as they should, causing a deep rift between the vulnerable majority and the protected few, and (2) how some individuals and organizations are laying the foundation for real, lasting change.
In this revelatory narrative covering the years 1967 to 2017, Steven Brill gives us a stunningly cogent picture of the broken system at the heart of our society.
He shows us how, over the last half-century, America’s core values — meritocracy, innovation, due process, free speech, and even democracy itself — have somehow managed to power its decline into dysfunction.
They have isolated our best and brightest, whose positions at the top have never been more secure or more remote.
The result has been an erosion of responsibility and accountability, an epidemic of shortsightedness, an increasingly hollow economic and political center, and millions of Americans gripped by apathy and hopelessness.
By examining the people and forces behind the rise of big-money lobbying, legal and financial engineering, the demise of private-sector unions, and a hamstrung bureaucracy, Brill answers the question on everyone’s mind: “How did we end up this way?”
Finally, he introduces us to those working quietly and effectively to repair the damages.
At once a diagnosis of our national ills, a history of their development, and a prescription for a brighter future, ‘Tailspin’ is a work of riveting journalism — and a welcome antidote to political despair.

People were told that it was okay to fail and that it wasn’t their fault and that the government would take care of them. Then one party grew their un-American agenda by telling those same people that they could solve all of their problems. Here we are today.

It a wonder how many educated but dumb people there.
America sat on loads of millions of years of cheaply extractable stored sun light.
You can have spirit, heart, drive & all other human qualities, but without all that coal then oil to harvest the non energy resources there is no modern USA.
Now, here’s the problem. You can produce the 10 greatest men to ever live, but neither alone nor together can they replace the low hanging (fruit) resources. We used it all. Oil is getting more expensive to extract & refine in some cases.
We you me live in a physical world & the fantasy years are soon over.

Synopsis of the “book”
Democrats are good. Republicans are bad.
Brill, a multimillionaire, who thinks that Americans are undertaxed. As long as it doesn’t affect him.
He’s a lawyer, so he’s smarter than all of you.
A nothing book by a mediocre person. Yawn..

Really, both wings of the eagle turned backwards and led the clawed beast to flip around an eff us all in the A, led by two parties, in a coordinated and highly manufactured effort.

apollo60, which is it? Is this person mediocre or a multimillionaire? Extremely difficult to be both unless he was born into it. Also, is a he a lawyer or is he mediocre? Most people barely have college degrees, let alone make it through specialized degree tracks like medicine or law, so it’s a pretty hard point to make.
It really just sounds like sour grapes on your part. I’ll remember your name and keep your attitude in mind in my assessment of your future comments.
Really very unfortunate.
