“Political correctness” has taken politeness and turned it into a weapon of censorship and intimidation.
In the workplace, on social media, and even at the dinner table, Americans are confronted daily with a laundry list of words they’re “not allowed” to say — and that list is updated constantly and without warning.
How did so absurd a concept become so dangerous — and come to dominate our public discourse over the last quarter-century?
In ‘Speechless,’ number one nationally best-selling author and political commentator Michael Knowles masterfully traces the history and effects of political correctness from the early 20th century to the present, revealing its insidious roots, exposing the power-hungry language architects behind its ever-growing control, and examining what this concerted manipulation of speech means for the future of American culture, politics, and minds.

someone told me that im an asshole so i got teaching How To Not Be An Asshole and How Come We Have So Many Assholes? outlawed in 21 states. Thatll show them that im against manipulating and policing speech and ideas!

Bigots and racists and assorted other trash don’t like being reminded of what they are.
June 23rd, 2021
Came for the howls of outrage from the NPCs.
Wasn’t disappointed.
Thanks, OP.

Thank you, Redstar. I needed a laugh tonight. Once again the left demonstrates that the strength of their arguments are on par with a 5-year old on the playground. Name calling. I suppose this calls for an equitable comeback… Doodoo head!
June 23rd, 2021
It’s kinda hard to argue policy with a group of people who don’t appear to live in the same reality. Both parties are guilty of that, but the GOP has been really overachieving in that area lately.
June 23rd, 2021
“words they’re “not allowed” to say”
Really? There are laws?
Or people just look at you with disgust?
All these MAGAs complaining how they are “censored”, “cancelled”, while they are publishing books, hours a day on a dozen TV and cable station, on Facebook, everywhere you look.
June 23rd, 2021
Socialists like telling you what it is allowed to say and they enjoy teaching you what to think.
There is a proud tradition starting from Hitler’s nat-socialism, and Mao’s and Stalin’s soc-communism and culminating in today’s soc-lib-dem ideology, to attack any dissenting ideas (book burning= cancel culture), to raise social hell if anyone dares to contradict their crazy ideas, and to enforce, by law if possible, their view, mandatory from kindergarten to the grave.
Hitler was not ambitious enough though, he could only imagine an “one-nation/continent = one social ideology”, today’s soc-dems are clearly trying to impose an “one globe=one ideology” system.
How crazy is that?
June 23rd, 2021
@haffner Well, since you don’t live in a “socialist” country, it’s just someone disagreeing with you. The closest thing to book burning recently has been the GOP rash of bills to ban history books mentioning slavery from schools.
Otherwise, can’t fathom what kind of conspiracy you’re imagining here, nothing related to the real world, and since you’ve Godwinned in your first post, end of discussion.
June 23rd, 2021
This censorship has got to stop. If I hop onto the Conservative Ræddit page and try to engage in a conversation I’m instantly silenced and my comments removed.
Too many snowflake Conservatives needing a safe space these days. Then they cry about censorship the second you don’t agree with them. It’s just constant projection.
June 23rd, 2021
@Gweilo
> The closest thing to book burning recently has been the GOP rash of bills to ban history books mentioning slavery from schools.
Why don’t you expand on that just a little and provide some actual examples of “book burning” by the evil GOP, i.e. the actual “bills to ban history books mentioning slavery from schools”?
June 23rd, 2021
one example:
https://www.texastribune.org/2021/06/15/abbott-critical-race-theory-law/
“Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the controversial bill that prescribes how Texas teachers can talk about current events and America’s history of racism in the classroom,”
But I DID NOT say this was book burning.
I was just giving a counter to one of the loony things in Haffner’s manifesto.
The rest was too crazy to need refutation.
This is like all Trump’s claims about voter fraud, when the only real cases have been people trying to vote for him.
But there has been actual book burning, in 2017: https://www.thedailybeast.com/koran-burning-westboro-baptist-church-burns-korans-and-the-american-flag
I will not continue discussion. Feel free to refute if you must.
June 23rd, 2021
Lol. So, now Gweilo thinks that if you disagree with the “racism under every rock” brigade, you’re a member of the Westboro Baptist Church? The most hated church on earth and supported by about 30 people in total?
That’s what happens when you drink too much Kool-Aid… you lose touch with reality completely.
June 23rd, 2021
@Gweilo
I’m aware that GOP in some states introduced bills to fight CRT (Critical Race Theory) and LGBT indoctrination in schools — I was not aware that GOP at any level was involved in banning some actual good books, including “history books mentioning slavery”. So, I was hoping you could provide some important related information on the subject.

Every time there’s a book burning in America, it’s nearly exclusively some right wing religious nutjob burning something that’s offended them.
June 23rd, 2021
> Every time there’s a book burning in America, it’s nearly exclusively some right wing religious nutjob burning something that’s offended them.
And the left are quick to make so much noise about that particular religious nutjob and book burning that many considerably more important book purges may go unnoticed:

June 23rd, 2021
Today book burning is just a protest.
My point was that today’s “cancel culture” = middle age book burning practices.
In the dark ages book burning was used by the church and autocrats to stop unorthodox ideas from spreading, punish their authors and intimidate their followers.
Exactly like today’s cancel culture!
(invented and still predominantly enforced by the lib-dem socialists)
June 23rd, 2021
Great upload and highly recommended read. Great tracing of a phenomenon so widespread but little understood which ends with a good gameplan for conservatives moving forwards
June 24th, 2021
@alnilam you seem to somehow have redirected me to some basement dweller’s blog.
@haffner the book burning in nazi germany was a protest against the ideas and authors of those books. Not an attempt to control knowledge. So great comparison there.
Cancel culture is a dumb buzzword made up by Republicans. When you do it, it’s just called ‘boycotting’, but if it’s something you don’t approve of, it’s called cancel culture. Because the only way Republicans can stop feeling so ineffectual and useless in a modern landscape is to make up Orwellian party slogans.
June 24th, 2021
@Alnilam: OK, I’m compelled to point out that “The American Library Association Purges Little House on the Prairie” is a lie.
They changed the name of a book award. That’s all.
https://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/06/ala-alsc-respond-wilder-medal-name-change
For God’s sake, don’t spread scare stories you see on these crazy sites before confirming them. You are destroying any credibility you or your positions might have had.

Spreading more ALA related scare stories:
With Libraries like These, Who Needs to Burn Books? by Eileen F. Toplansky | Feb 21, 2021 https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2021/02/with_libraries_like_these_who_needs_to_burn_books.html
June 24th, 2021
@alnilam You repeated a lie. You don’t acknowledge that, you just move on to another fairy tale from some far right loonie that misrepresents what thin basis of facts inspired it.
Just aping Trump’s whole style: keep flinging crap at the wall, double down on lies.
June 24th, 2021
@Gweilo
> You repeated a lie. You don’t acknowledge that, you just move on to another fairy tale from some far right loonie that misrepresents what thin basis of facts inspired it…
I’m not sure I understand what exactly you want me to “acknowledge”. How much of a lie it can possibly be, taking into consideration that the fact you keep repeating (”ALA changed the name of a book award”) is actually mentioned in that article?
June 25th, 2021
Thanks!
June 25th, 2021
@alnilam I did not repeat, I stated it once. The headline you quoted is a lie, the facts don’t back it up, and you personally stated there was a “book purge”. No books were “purged”.
June 25th, 2021
@Gweilo
So, in fact, you are talking here about the author’s choice of words, for some reason trying to portray it as my “lies” — while avoiding the actual subject, as if nothing like the undesired books “purge” and “replacement” by the progressives is actually happening:
“On March 2, 2021 – celebrated as Read Across America Day – Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which manages the estate of the late children’s author, announced that after consulting “with a panel of experts, including educators” it had decided to cease publication and licensing of the following books: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer.
What was the problem with these books? According to DSE, they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.” This was, in any event, the conclusion reached in a 2019 academic paper, “The Cat is Out of the Bag: Orientalism, Anti-Blackness, and White Supremacy in Dr. Seuss’s Children’s Books,” by Katie Ishizuka of The Conscious Kid Library and Ramón Stephens of UC-San Diego. Read every word of this turgid paper if you wish; if not, suffice it to say that these six titles, originally published between 1937 and 1976, contain material that offends contemporary woke sensibilities. And that can’t be allowed.
These aren’t the only children’s books being canceled these days. Former New York Times columnist Bari Weiss recently noted the removal from high school curricula of such classics as The Scarlet Letter, Little Women, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies.
But fear not! To commemorate Read across America, the National Education Association (NEA) has compiled a list of recommended titles for kids, most of which are explicitly designed to indoctrinate children in some aspect of woke ideology”…
The New Children’s Crusade: Goodbye, Dr. Seuss. Hello, woke books for kids by Bruce Bawer | Jun 17, 2021 https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/2021/06/new-childrens-crusade-bruce-bawer

@Alnilam ” I’m “portraying” it as your words, because they are your words.
And now FFS, Dr Dr. Suess.
June 25th, 2021
Michael Knowles is pretty funny. Some of what he says is pretty spot on.
June 26th, 2021
Good Book must read for everyone.
June 26th, 2021
@Gweilo
The actual question here was “does it, or does it not renaming a book award named after Laura Ingalls Wilder by ALA qualify as her books purge?”
(i) interpreting “books purge” as “Laura Ingalls Wilder already removed by the Left from everywhere” — the answer would be “no”, or more precisely “not yet”
(ii) interpreting “books purge” as “significant first step of the Left to removing Laura Ingalls Wilder books from everywhere in the future” (I’m pretty sure that was Daniel Greenfield’s implied meaning) — the answer would be “yes, it is both likely and possible”
You were a bit too quick to accuse me of “lying”, without even bothering to ask any related questions of that nature — you just assumed that my implied meaning of “books purge” (ii) is exactly the same as yours (i), found a convenient semi-plausible technicality to exploit (even though the article is perfectly clear on important details), and the rest is history.
June 26th, 2021
@Gweilo
> And now FFS, Dr Dr. Suess
What does that even mean?
June 27th, 2021
@Alnilam
“many considerably more important book purges may go unnoticed:”
Renaming a book award is not a “purge” under any definition. EVERY definition implies complete removal.
Since NO BOOKS AT ALL WERE REMOVED, using that word is a lie. QED.
“FFS, Dr Dr. Suess” Aside from the stutter, it’s frustration at the return of this absurd GOP talking point. A publisher decided not to reprint a book. Happens to MOST books actually, only very few are reprinted even once. None of the well known Suess books being read out by “outraged” Republicans were “threatened”. There was no “cancel” campaign.
June 28th, 2021
@Gweilo
The important question, so far missing from the conversation: why would the Left even bother renaming some (conservative) book awards, stopping publishing some (conservative) books and all that, making significant initial steps in the direction of the above mentioned CONSERVATIVE BOOKS PURGE, if they did not intend to go all the way in the first place, until arriving at the desired final solution?
The slow, incremental nature of this purge-and-replace method allows them to pretend that nothing significant is happening, move along people and nothing to see here.
Maybe there’s something I’m missing here, like some important limiting principle that would absolutely not allow the Left to proceed in the same purge-and-replace books direction past a certain success point — if so, I’m all ears.
June 28th, 2021
@alnilam: “the left” did not do anything. It was a Librarian association and I linked to their long article explaining what they did and why. You want to see a vast conspiracy, you attach it to people you don’t like; nothing will convince you otherwise. I won’t even try, but again, you lied when you stated there had been a purge. Just because you imagine that there will be one some time in the future doesn’t make it true.
June 28th, 2021
@Gweilo
> You want to see a vast conspiracy, you attach it to people you don’t like…
Your words, not mine. I never said I did not like any particular people or group — only certain ideas and methods, adhered to and practiced by some.
> I won’t even try, but again, you lied when you stated there had been a purge…
If you repeat the words “you lied” a few dozen times more, it will still not make your statement true. I believe I have sufficiently explained what I meant by using the statement “books purge”. The conservative books purge by the Left objectively exists, it is a long incremental step-by-step process, and it is likely to attract more people’s attention and resistance. And good luck to you to keep explaining and rationalizing it back and forth in such a fashion, like it’s a perfectly normal thing to do, which “happens all the time”, move along people and nothing to see here.
