Publisher’s Summary
From one of the foremost authorities on education and the history of education in the United States, Slaying Goliath is an impassioned, inspiring look at the ways in which parents, teachers, and activists are successfully fighting back to defeat the forces that are trying to privatize America’s public schools.
Diane Ravitch writes of a true grassroots movement sweeping the country, from cities and towns across America, a movement dedicated to protecting public schools from those who are funding privatization and who believe that America’s schools should be run like businesses and that children should be treated like customers or products.
Slaying Goliath is about the power of democracy, about the dangers of plutocracy, and about the potential of ordinary people - armed like David with only a slingshot of ideas, energy, and dedication - to prevail against those who are trying to divert funding away from our historic system of democratically governed, nonsectarian public schools. Among the lessons learned from the global pandemic of 2020 is the importance of our public schools and their teachers and the fact that distance learning can never replace human interaction, the personal connection between teachers and students.

Seems like the real issue is a battle between two opposing forces of capitalism and social/communism.
With privatized education, we’d be influenced by profit.
With public education we’d be indoctrinated by policymakers feeding into their machine.thatt plan hasn’t worked well for society to date.
While a free society can be somewhat brutal towards the weak willed, I’d have to side with capitalism and privatization in the long run. But, hold off on that for the next 5-7 years until I complete my degree please, I’d like to get as much assistance with my tuition as possible.
Thank you

Public Schools, as institutions for learning are DEAD! They need to be DEFUNDED!!
PS’s today do not teach Critical Thinking, Math, English, or Reading, they’re more concerned about teaching critical race theory (or, why Whitey is bad), Bobby has two Mommies, or that there are more then 2 sexes. They are failing miserably to educate! Cranking out functional illiterates that are easily led, and easily influenced is the goal.
I believe that there are 3 options if you want to educate your children:
1) Home Schooling (Research suggests homeschooled children tend to do better on standardized tests, stick around longer in college, and do better once they’re enrolled.)
2) Parochial School (Not as subjected to the politics as public schools)
3) Private School (this a gamble as well)
Teachers Unions and people like Ravitch are a large part of the problem with PS’s.

Defund, Dismantle and De-Feminize. Public schools have failed the public. Charter schools provide CHOICE to parents. Parents need to fully investigate what the curriculum for public schools has become. It’s no longer the education you remember. Pull your kids from the indoctrination of public schools.

Surprise surprise, the uneducated conspiracy theorists are rallying against schools.
@apollo60 what you’ve said is factually untrue. Good luck finding any public school that doesn’t teach reading, science or maths.
@BoxingBookBay alienating your kids from the real world seems a strange choice, but whatever floats your boat.

Just look at the output of our public schools rated against other nations and draw your own conclusions. The whole nation thinks there’s a problem and their only solution is throw more money at it.

All of my kids went to private, Catholic schools for there “pre-college” educations. One went K-12 the others went K-8 and then went to Charter Schools. All of them are YEARS ahead of kids that went to public schools. Private/Charter schools don’t have tenure protection for teachers, challenge their students, and teachers either perform or they are gone.
There is NO comparison between the poorly-run public education system and the private/Charter school education.

sorry…*their “pre-college” educations.
not “there”.

A bureaucrat and socialist writes about how important the bureaucratic and socialistic education system is. Really fresh and exciting stuff, I’m sure.
If you want to read something on this issue from someone who actually knows what the hell they’re talking about and isn’t biased beyond all hope, read John Taylor Gatto. He actually taught (unlike this woman) for ~30 years and won multiple statewide Teacher of the Year awards.

You hopeless dolt.
Have you read the recent report about the Bill that Governor Kate Brown of Oregon signed?
“Gov. Kate Brown signed a law to allow Oregon students to graduate without proving they can read, write or do math. She doesn’t want to talk about it”. Suspending the reading, writing and math proficiency requirements while the state develops new graduation standards will benefit “Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”
That, Jack, is a Racist Governor

Charter schools are scams and vouchers are BS. If you want to send your kid to a private school, by all means, go ahead, but your taxes should still fund public schools. You shouldn’t get to “pick and choose” where the taxes you pay go. Vouchers are another example of rich elites evading taxes.
Public schools aren’t the problem. Elite “entitlement” is.
With that said, allow me to revise my position on private schools- Abolish them, all private k-12 schools, then fund public schools according to the number of students enrolled, not according to district property values.
How do you improve public schools? You make the “elites” send their kids to same schools the rest of us send ours.
