An on-the-ground look at the rise of parent activism in response to the far-right attacks on public school education
For well over a century, public schools have been a non-partisan gathering place and vital center of civic life in America—but something has changed. In School Moms, journalist Laura Pappano explores the on-the-ground story of how public schools across the country have become ground zero in a cultural and political war as the far-right have made efforts to seek power over school boards.
Pappano argues that the rise of parent activism is actually the culmination of efforts that began in the 1990s after campaigns to stop sex education largely fizzled. Recent efforts to make public schools more responsive and inclusive, as well as the pandemic, have offered openings the far-right have been waiting for to organize and sway parents, who are frustrated and exhausted by remote learning, objections by teacher’s unions, and shifting directives from school leaders. Groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education are organizing against revised history curricula they have dubbed as “CRT,” banning books, pressing for “Don’t Say Gay” laws, and asserting “parental rights” to gain control over the review of classroom materials. On the other side, progressive groups like Support Our Schools and Red, Wine & Blue are mobilizing parents to counter such moves.
Combining on-the-ground reporting with research and expert interviews, School Moms will take a hard look at where these battles are happening, what is at stake, and why it matters for the future of our schools.

Thank you very much for this book. We need to take back our children’s education and restore are nations schools back to their intended purpose—the education of America’s future.

I was wondering whether SantaFe would see Moms for Threesomes as an opportunity.

This is propaganda for the far left. Parents need to ALWAYS be in control of what is being taught in schools. And anything outside of that which occurs in schools that will affect their child.
The far lefts insane attempts to try and get as many of our kids castrated/sterilized (Im starting to think this is part of the globalists mission to bring our populations down) needs to be solely decided by the parent.
I’ve heard a lot of CRT says to our students, there are some valid points, like slavery is evil and needs to be prevented from ever occurring again (or stopped in the case of Africa and the Mid East who still have them), but it also says that everyone and everything that is not black is racist is just ignorant nonsense and needs to end.
Radical takeover in mostly liberal colleges is what is dividing us and that needs to stop too.

The truth is it takes a village to raise a child. We have all learned and developed from our exposure to multiple sources, not just our parents. The right does not want people with critical thinking skills as this leads to independent thought and an inability to control people. The right wants a population who can be kept in fear and anger. A population that is willing to follow their “betters”
CRT is NOT taught in k-12
Given the long arc of history the progressive liberal left always wins because people want equality, individual freedoms, and dignity. You know ” with liberty and justice for all”.

Interesting timebiter. You are right about a lot of that. When humans lived in villages they are more communal than we are today. Cities have caused nothing but problems. I didn’t know DRT is not taught in high school. But what you said:
“The right does not want people with critical thinking skills as this leads to independent thought and an inability to control people. The right wants a population who can be kept in fear and anger. ”
That is exactly what I’ve heard the right say about the left. So there is some serious misunderstanding with this whole division. I see it as the globalists who are doing this dividing so they can brig the USA down. Both sides are wrong but they will never see past their own ideologies.

I am conflicted on the issue. Like the word says PUBLIC schools where started by governments and education was enforced by governments. The idea was that the children belong to society and not alone to the parents. The initial objective was to educate the public with basic knowledge: read, write, math, …
A government has more resources to evaluate what makes a good school. I really do not see how a few moms and pops have the knowledge and resources to determine what makes a good school.
I also see that in America that public education has be hi-jacked by ideologists. They are neglecting basic educations and spreading propaganda.
Although parents are not the experts who can setup a good school they are currently the best option to what the government has to offer.
@Hogweed: I do not see any critical thinking efforts on the left if every critical question about gender and sex is bombarded with *phobia.
@timebiter1355: The real winner has always been democracy in combination with capitalism. Everywhere where totalitarianism exist, either on the left or right, human rights went down the drain. I see currently both sided fighting for absolute control. Yes the left are also aiming for totalitarianism.
