Now adapted for young readers ages 12 through 18, the national best seller that makes real American history come alive in all of its conflict, drama, and complexity
Lies My Teacher Told Me is one of the most important - and successful - history books of our time. Having sold nearly two million copies, the book won an American Book Award and the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship.
Now Rebecca Stefoff, the acclaimed nonfiction children’s writer who adapted Howard Zinn’s bestseller A People’s History of the United States for young readers, makes Loewen’s beloved work available to younger students. Essential listening in our age of fake news and slippery, sloppy history, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Young Readers’ Edition cuts through the mindless optimism and outright lies found in most textbooks that are often not even really written by their “authors.”
Loewen is, as historian Carol Kammen has said, the history teacher we all should have had. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and then covering characters and events as diverse as the first Thanksgiving, Helen Keller, the My Lai massacre, 9/11, and the Iraq War, Loewen’s lively, provocative telling of American history is a “counter-textbook that retells the story of the American past” (The Nation).
This streamlined young readers’ edition is rich in vivid details and quotations from primary sources that poke holes in the textbook versions of history and help students develop a deeper understanding of our world. Lies My Teacher Told Me: Young Readers’ Edition brings this classic text to a new generation (and their parents and teachers) who will welcome and value its honesty, its humor, and its integrity.

Another Leftist, revisionist view of history. As if schools weren’t leftist enough already! Teachers are indoctrinating children how America is racist, sexist, and xenophobic. They never put into context the true history of our country. A country that is not without its mistakes but has paid for those mistakes in blood, lives, and economic value. It is impossible to judge history by the standards we use today. America is the best country because we allow different viewpoints and (at least used to) welcome civil public discourse. This is just more victim-glorifying and does nothing to help move this country, and especially its children, forward. We are already faced with a generation of children that are unhappier, lonelier, much more unmoored, and much less able to cope using social skills than any previous generation. Teaching them to hate the country that gave them all the opportunities they have is not a good plan, unless you simply are part of the group that wants to control the masses through government dependence.

I completely agree and believe the silent majority shares our opinion

@cpl1stnjbattb I notice you don’t dispute any of the factual claims made in the book. If you think disabusing children of lies will make them hate the USA, then you must not think much of the country or its students.

Read the original version and highly recommend this for all. Telling the truth about our history is the ethical thing to do. Denying it is just causing more problems.

This book is a continuation of the “hate America” propaganda that the msm, democrats and the left like to put forth in the public school system. It’s not education, it’s ensuring the group think and thought police of George Orwell’s 1984 classic novel.
Little wonder that public school children fail in nearly every category of core courses that are meaningful in life. Do your children a service and send them to Charter schools, parochial school or private school. Do you think the rich, leftist elite send their children to public school? I wonder if this book details the origin of the Democratic Party was the KKK. Hitler used many of their ideas for his Nazi beliefs.

Yup, Hitler lied to his people. So do/did the schooling systems all over the world. History is not science, it’s open to all sorts of interpretations and manipulations.
While I’ve played my share of them cowboys n’ injuns, as an adult I can spot most of the lies. I like good stories and yarns, but I don’t have to believe in them.
History, as truthful as we can get it, is there for the learning, not covering up or being pleased about crimes and bloodshed.

I read the original Lies My Teacher Told Me years ago (back when it was still controversial). What struck me most is that non-USians have known all this stuff all along.
I go careful among any US refugees I meet these days: it’s not easy to question authority, if you’re spineless.

The “Oliver Cromwell” Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship genuinely sounds like a satirical award. That nominal conjuction is scarcely synonymous with anti-racism. Racist genocide, more like. Why not the Joseph Stalin Bates humanitarian award?
As a necessary, balancing corrective, I’d suggest the estimable TTC lecture series “The Skeptics Guide to American History” by the esteemed Mark A. Stoler.
(And for those tempted to gloat & feel bogus superiority towards Americans - don’t forget the good old British Empire, its poison gas, managed famines & concentration camps - wot, wot?! Glass houses, and all that)

Lie #1 America & Americans are exceptional.
Y’all have become, nay, made yourselves into the laughingstock of the world.
Blame & hate is all you have left. Want blame look in the mirror because it’s all of you.
What else would you expect from a toxic degenerate culture of self absorbed adult babies?
Garbage in, garbage out.

But you are saying that Americans are exceptional. You’re saying that they’re exceptionally bad. If that were even the case, why do people continue to want to go there in huge numbers?
What makes the rest of the world exceptionally good, and Americans exceptionally bad by comparison? Have you seen the rest of the world? Any blame & hate out there? Of course not.
“A head full of false imaginings” indeed.

apnea,
you kind has been saying this for 50 years.
We should have just got rid of you all for good then.
Instead we let you live among us to bring us down with your defeatism, negativity and pessimism.
No more. It’s time to deal with the very real threat of Marxist like you.

What I fact checked was accurate, can’t speak to what’s in today’s text books.
He covers quite a bit stuff that I’m fairly certain wasn’t even touched on when I went to school back in the 80’s. Sometimes I felt the need was more compelling than others for HS student to know.
I can certainly see why it offends anyone who holds nationalist or populous views it’s a bit ironic they scream revisionist though.

History’s relevance to an audience is related to their participation in it. Elementary school children need to know the history that brought us to now, the world they live in. They can get by with the glossing over of the settling of the New World, focusing on the founding of the colonies instead of [continuing] the genocide of the First Americans; the signing of the Declaration of Independence declaring All Men Equal and leave out a lot of the hypocrisy of a bunch of rich landed white men endowing themselves and other rich landed white men with inalienable rights–rights they did not see fit to grant all men [or women], regardless of whether they were Black or not; and on and on and on.
High school students get to revisit those glossings and delve more into it. They learn of slavery and the Trail of Tears; sadly, they rarely learn of the Japanese interment camps, which is not revisionist history…that’s actually not a thing. Facts are facts. And that’s the point. Kids get facts. Older students get more facts. Adults need the facts they were too young and immature to understand when they learned about all this glorious history. All history is revisionist in that the teacher is choosing which facts to convey, the author which facts to document, a society which facts to remember. American Exceptionalism? The facts are there. And denying the additional facts of contributions of non-white immigrants (and even women! in a country made up of 99% immigrants and just over half of the forbidden sex) to that American Exceptionalism isn’t revisionist, it’s still just facts.
Anyway, I’ve always remembered one particular story in the original book about Paul Revere. To all those outraged at the revisionism, why do remember Paul Revere? Was it because of his midnight ride warning the British were coming? Yeah. Paul Revere was actually indisposed that night but the warning, most definitely, went out as history “documents”. Read the book or, better, listen to this new one instead. It probably has just the right participation level of facts to reach you.

Interesting points, but such ideologically-driven historiography amounts only to a depressing, oxymor*nic tangle. Hopelessly misconceived ab initio, it conjures nothing of true value.
August 15th, 2020
The sad thing is this book is the kind of lies taught by teachers.
August 15th, 2020
Give some examples of the lies please? Just saying it’s lying with no examples a pretty vague in a nearly 7 hour listen.
August 15th, 2020
@caesar963 Thank you for responding. I hoped you would.
August 16th, 2020
Read ‘debunking Howard Zinn’ if you’re interested in the actual history behing the anti-American propaganda in this work of fiction.
And tell your friends ;)
August 16th, 2020
That’s grand, Malachie. As I said, interesting points.

Progressivism is a slipperly slope. Take a rational step or two and you end up with no end it sight.
Ask yourself if liberalism has created a better world or if you miss the old world where everything isn’t falling apart.
