I never really got much out of the classics until I stopped listening to classicists and went back to the texts themselves to find out what the ancients were about. Of course, this meant I ended up reading rubbish like Lucian, the elder Pliny, and Apollonius Rhodius - instead of the stuff you are supposed to.
Mary Beard has a remarkably patrician approach to the canon, so if you want to read something instead of literature, or if you fear being challenged, this book is a good place to start.
Or you could approach it ironically.

Mary Beard is surlay conquered the current and 2000s generations the way Rome conquered the mediterranean.even if your speciality was not classics or ancient literature and history overall Mary beard make it Hobby for you anyway.
